By MIRKA SOBBENSKIAssociated Press (AP)It’s not a great sign for a country that has the world’s fastest Internet connections, but a nationwide outage has shut down much of the country for about a day.
The government-run National Telecommunications Company (NTC) said it had restored service for some 1.2 million people across the country, though a nationwide blackout remains in place.
It said it has restored service to more than 300,000 homes and businesses in several regions.
It also said it was helping to restore Internet speeds to customers who have experienced outages.NTC has been under heavy criticism in recent months for the slow Internet speeds it provides.
The government has repeatedly complained about the lack of service, especially in rural areas where people typically have to rely on AT&T to get online.
The outage was first reported late Wednesday.
It came just hours after the government announced a new broadband program to boost broadband access for more people.NTCC said it does not have a timeline for when it will resume service.
The country’s telecommunications regulator, the Public Broadband Authority of India, is also working to restore the Internet speeds.
The blackout comes just a few days after Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government unveiled a new $3 billion broadband program, dubbed Make in India, that aims to connect nearly 60 million people.
