ANZ chief executive Andrew Scipione said the network was “overwhelmed” by demand on Wednesday, but did not give a timeframe for when the network might be restored.
“It’s very difficult to get a clear picture of how long it’s going to take for this to be repaired,” Mr Scipio said.
“We are not at the point of being able to predict how long this is going to last, but it’s certainly going to be a long time.”
He said he expected the network to be back up to normal in the next week.
“This is the first outage of the year that I think we’ve seen since 2010, which was the peak of the Internet,” Mr Shippo said.”[It’s] a bit of a different situation this time.”
Mr Scipion said the outage was caused by a network upgrade that took place at the end of last year.
“I think we are now at the stage of the network that we’re at right now, that’s not something that has been out there for a while,” he said.
The outage is affecting around 4.4 million people, and is likely to affect around 100,000 households, with another 5 million people affected by the problem.
